RCMP seize nearly two tonnes of contraband tobacco over several days

CORNWALL, Ont. — The RCMP say they’ve seized just about two tonnes of contraband tobacco and made a couple of arrests in japanese Ontario over a number of days.

Police say the primary came about on Feb. four, when officials interrupted an alleged smuggling operation in the back of the Kids’s Help Society development in Cornwall, Ont.

They are saying officials seized 42 luggage containing just about 563 kilograms of unstamped fine-cut tobacco, in addition to a snowmobile and a pickup truck, and arrested a 24-year-old guy.

Within the early hours of Feb. 6, police say they stopped a pickup truck wearing 38 luggage containing simply over 653 kg of fine-cut tobacco in South Glengarry, Ont., alongside the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.

Police say they arrested the 59-year-old motive force and 19-year-old passenger.

A little while later, police say they seized any other truck in Summerstown, Ont., east of Cornwall, that used to be loaded with 40 luggage containing simply over 693 kg of fine-cut tobbaco.

The 50-year-old motive force and 24-year-old passenger were arrested.

All accused are charged underneath the Excise Act in addition to the provincial Tobacco Tax Act. The 50-year-old additionally faces fees of flight from police and perilous riding.
